| | It is very important that you interview any prospective doulas before hiring, to make sure they are compatible with your personality and needs. Meet in person if you possibly can, or at least chat over the phone. To help you get the information you need, here are some questions you could ask:
Labor Doulas
- What led you to become a doula?
- What is your philosophy about labor and birth?
- What is your training and education?
- How many times do we meet together before the birth? What kind of things will we do when we meet?
- When do you usually join a labor? Will you come to my home or just the birthplace?
- How will you and my partner work together to support me?
- Do you have a backup doula for times when you are unavailable? May we meet them before the birth?
- How much do you charge for your services? Do I pay in advance? Do you have a refund policy?
- May I contact some of your past clients for their perspective?
Postpartum Doulas
- What is your philosophy on parenting newborns?
- What is your training and education?
- How many times do we meet before the baby's birth? May I call with questions before the birth?
- What sort of services do you offer? Do you cook, do baby laundry, run errands?
- Will you stay overnight?
- What breastfeeding experience do you have?
- How soon after the birth do you usually arrive?
- Have you had a criminal background check and a recent TB test?
- Are you certified in infant CPR?
- Do you have a backup doulas for times when you are not available?
- How much do you charge for your services? Do I pay in advance? Do you have a refund policy?
- May I contact some of your past clients for their perspective?
