| | A Labor Doula is a professionally-trained support person whose job it is to guide mothers through the process of labor and birth, offering emotional support and a wide variety of comfort measures. Studies show that having a doula present can:
- result in shorter labors with fewer complications
- reduce negative feelings about one's childbirth experience
- reduce the need for pitocin, vacuum extraction, forceps use, and cesarean sections
- reduce a mother's need for pain medication, including epidurals
Postpartum Doulas are trained to support families as they welcome their new baby into their home. They can assist with breastfeeding and baby care, help siblings adjust to their new family member, and help the household run smoothly. Research shows that parents who are supported by a postpartum doula usually:- feel more secure, confident, and cared for
- have greater success with breastfeeding
- have less incidence of postpartum depression
- are more successful in adapting to new family dynamics
